21st December 2009

Sunday's competition was cancelled due to the snow fall. Competitions this week are a nine hole re-entry on the 26th and the Christmas Scramble on the 27th, draw at 12.30. New Years day will be a 12 hole stableford. A Texas Holdem Poker Classic will be held on Monday 28th in the Clubhouse at 4.00. The event is in aid of Club Funds, all support appreciated.
Finally we wish all members, friends and supporters a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

30th November
Results for last Sundays Christmas Turkey Competition were 1st Gerry Emmett with 19pts, 2nd Michael Simon 18pts (Countback) and 3rd Gary Carty 18pts. Next Sunday will be the Christmas Bonanza with prizes for all cards returned. Format will be 18 hole stableford. Prize-giving will take place at 5.30 with each person picking their prize in order of placing. It is important to attend to ensure you choose your own prize (unless you come last).
At the Mens AGM held in the Clubhouse last week Captain Brendan Gaffney thanked all the Members, Officers and Committee for their support in 2009 and said it had been a great honour for him to be Captain. He also thanked all local people and business for their support during the year. He wished incoming Captain James Cooke the best for the coming year. In response James Cooke thanked the Meeting for electing him and looked forward to a successful 2010. He paid tribute to Brendan Gaffney for a great year and thanked him for all his hard work. 9th November

The winter league finished last weekend, thanks to all who took part. Thanks also to the organisers for all the work in ensuring the competition was a great success and to Phil and Gerry for providing catering. The competition winners were Brendan Gaffney, Michael Reid and Attracta Keville, in 2nd place were James Cooke, James Shivnan and Eddie Conroy. 3rd place went to Dermot Lally, Ross Andrew and Paddy McLoughlin. The daily prize winners were, 1st day Jim Mooney, Timmy Carty and Ryan Finneran, 2nd day Patrick Egan, Michael Bermingham and Mary McKeon, 3rd day Sean Heslin, Vincent Egan and Gerry O'Hara. Last Sunday was also the first of the Christmas Turkey competitions. Results were 1st Terry Bright (22pts), 2nd Gerry Emmett (21pts) and 3rd Pat Conroy (20pts).

Next Sunday will be second of the Turkey competitions. Format will be a nine hole stableford. A club outing will also take place next weekend to Castlebar with golf in Claremorris and Ballinrobe. Report to follow next week.
Date for your diary are the AGM’s next Sunday at 5.00 for the Mens and Ladies Clubs. All members are encouraged to attend. Best wishes to incoming Captains for 2010, James Cooke and Peggy Feely.

27 October
Last weekend's Club Classic was a great success in spite of the weather, thanks to all who took part. The winners were the “Dream Team” of Liam Whyte, Michael Keville and Pat Conroy who finished with a great score of 57.2, close behind in second place were the Loftus Family of Colm, Dara and Margaret who finished with 57.4. Rumour is that Margaret was the Putting Queen in the team, 3rd place went to Pat Gannon and Phil and Gerry Emmett with a score of 58.8.
Next weekend is the final round of the Winter league with all still to play for. Leading the way are Brendan Gaffney, Michael Reid and Attracta Keville, with Dermot Lally, Ross Andrew and Paddy McLoughlin close behind. Gerry Emmett, Declan Carty and Gerry Egan are in third place. Watch out for the King Harmon Final between Brendan Gaffney and Michael Keville.

18 October
The 2nd round of the winter league took place last weekend with most teams still in contention. Current leaders are Brendan Gaffney, Michael Reid and Attracta Keville, 2nd Dermot Lally, Ross Andrew and Paddy McLoughlin, 3rd Gerry Emmett, Declan Carty and Gerry Egan. The final round takes place in two weeks time as next weekend is a Club Classic. Format will be a Three Ball Scramble and can be played Saturday, Sunday and Monday.Entry fee is €15 per person with a re-entry of €10. Catering will be available on Sunday and Monday.
Last Thursday's Mens competition was won by Michael Keville with 22 pts, 2nd Brendan Gaffney, 3rd Dermot Lally. Results from Thursday 8th were 1st Owen Garvin 25pts, 2nd Michael Rush 21pts and 3rd Michael Reid 20pts. There will be a competition this Thursday, weather permitting.
In other news best of luck to Brendan Gaffney and Michael Keville who will contest the King Harmon Final.

28 September

Last Sundays nine hole stableford was won by Michael Simon with 22pts, 2nd Gerry Emmett with 21pts, 3rd Jimmy Dwyer 19pts (Countback). Thursday nights Competition was won by, Damian Eames with 23pts, 2nd Willie Tiernan 21pts (countback) and 3rd Pat Conroy 21pts (Countback). Friday was the last of the Scrambles and was a freebie with “prizes for everyone in the audience”. 1st Place to Brendan Gaffney, Mary Lombard and John Tiernan, 2nd Karl Keenan, Pat Conroy, Michael Gilmartin and Gareth Gilmartin At the presentation Club Captain Brendan Gaffney thanked all who took part in this years scrambles and said that they were a great success. The results for last weekends Inter Club Alliance in Strokestown will follow next week.
Competitions for this week are the Mens Competition on Thursday and an 18 hole stableford on Sunday 4th
The draw for the winter league took place last Sunday with the first round on Saturday/Sunday October 10th/11th. Format will be an 18 hole Scramble, full details on noticeboard.
An finally, Best wishes to Phil and Gerry who head off for a well earned break and also a speedy recovery to James Shivnan who put his back out while on holiday recently!

August 2nd
There was a large turnout last Sunday for the Captains Prize with almost seventy taking part. Congrats to Pat Conroy who has come close on a number of occasions and is a worthy winner. At the presentation ceremony Club Captain Brendan Gaffney thanked everyone who took part or helped in any way with the event. He congratulated all the winners and said he was delighted the day was such a success. The thanked the Musicians and also Phil and Gerry. He also thanked all those who took part or assisted in the Captains Scramble and the Junior Competition. The full list of prize-winners were as follows:

In the junior competition the category winners were Karen Carty, Mairead Nally, Paddy Nally Cillian Doyle, and Niall McDermott. Paddy Nally spoke on behalf of the Juniors to thank all who helped with the competition and he wished Brendan the best of luck with the Captains Prize.

Other results for the week were Thursday Nights Mens competition was won by Pat Gannon (30), 2nd Michael Keville (28) 3rd Gary Carty (27). Fridays Captains Scramble was won by Gary Carty, Gerry Egan and Donal Smith. 2nd Patrick Egan, Carmel Keenan and Peter Leydon, 3rd Brendan Gaffney, Paddy McLoughlin and Sean McLoughlin. A double for the McLoughlin brothers.

In inter club news good luck to our Connacht Shield Team who take on Castledargan on Tuesday and our Cecil Ewing Team who play Carrick on Saturday. The first round of the the King Harmon has begun and is to be completed by August 16th. Competitions for this week are the Mens Competition on Thursday and Friday nights Scramble. Next Sundays competition is an Open Event for Boyle Business Association. Details to be confirmed

And finally, congrats to Aine O’Connor on winning the Queen of the Curlews last Saturday and well done to the Ladies GAA on a great night.

July 27th
Michael O’Donnell won Sunday's 18 hole stroke with a 64. 2nd Karl Keenan 66 (Countback), Gross Gary Carty, 3rd Thomas Gallagher 66. Thursday nights Competition and Fridays Scramble were both cancelled due to the bad weather. In inter club competitions congrats to our Connacht Shield Team who beat Strandhill and now play Castledargan in the next round. Congrats also to our Cecil Ewing Team who beat Enniscrone and are now through to the zone final against Carrick-on-Shannon. Commiserations to our mixed foursomes who were narrowly beaten by Claremorris in the Connacht semi-final
Competitions for this week are the Mens Competition on Thursday night, Friday will be the Captains Scramble and next Sunday is the Captains Prize. Format will be an 18 hole stroke with a timesheet on the noticeboard. Best wishes to Club Captain Brendan Gaffney for a great day. A presentation social will take place approx 10.00 in the Clubhouse with all welcome. Captains prize to the Juniors will take place on Saturday at 11.00. The King Harmon draw has taken place with first round matches to be played by August 16th.
And finally: Commiserations to the Roscommon Minors who were beaten in the Connacht final last Sunday and also to the seniors who were beaten by Meath on Saturday

July 13th
Last Saturday saw the start of open week with an 18 Hole stableford won by Jordan Nally with 40pts, 2nd David Wynne 39pts, Gross Gary Carty, 3rd Dylan Beirne 37pts. Winner for the Ladies was Liz Dwyer 32pts, 2nd Tish Perry 29pts (countback), 3rd Phil Emmet 29pts.
Sunday was a fourball better ball won by Patrick and Vincent Egan with 47pts, 2nd place to John Tiernan & Jimmy Dwyer 46pts (countback), 3rd place Brendan Gaffney & Jim Mooney 46pts Visitors prize G Burke & D McDermott. Thursday nights Mens Competition was won by Dermot Lally with 28pts (countback), 2nd Michael Gilmartin 28pts (Countback), 3rd Michael Bermingham.
Friday evening's Scramble was won by Patrick Egan, Michael Simon and Thomas Conroy, 2nd place went to Gerry Emmet, Liz Dwyer and Adrian King. In inter club Competitions congrats to our Cecil Ewing Team who won 3/2 against Ballaghdereen last Saturday and now face Enniscrone in the next round.
Commiserations to our Jack O’Sullivan Team who lost out narrowly to Strandhill. Open week continues this week with Ladies 18 hols stroke on Tuesday and a nine hole Stableford for the Men, a Scotch Mixed Foursomes on Wednesday, Thursday is a Mens 18 hole stroke and nine hole stroke for the ladies. Friday a nine hole Stableford re-entry and Saturday a Three Ball Rumble for Ladies & Gents. The finale on Sunday is an 18 Hole stroke Ladies & Gents. Thanks to all our sponsors and the organising committee and we look forward to a great week.

And finally…..It was with great sadness that the Club heard of the passing of Niamh Nangle during the week. Niamh was a past member of the Club and a daughter of Paddy and Phylis Nangle, Maple Drive. We send our deepest sympathy to all her family. Ar dheis de.go raibh a hanam dhílis. May she rest in peace.

July 6th

Last Sunday was Lady Captains day with a great turnout for Susan Gaffneys big day. Congrats to the winner Mary McKeon. The full list of prize winners are as follows…..1st Mary McKeon 2nd Claire Cryan, Gross Liz Dwyer, 3rd Phil Emmet Categories 0-18 Patricia Perry, 19-29 Mandy Toolan, 30-360 Geraldine McDermotroe, Past Captain Joey Mullaney, 1st Nine Gloria Hogan, 2nd Nine Carmel Corcoran, The beginners prize was won by Mary O Hara and the improvers prize was won by Attracta Keville who also had birdie on the 4th Visitors Prize Edel McDermott. Thanks to all for taking part or assisting in any way and thanks to Phil and Gerry for the catering. The nine hole for the men was won by Lionel Lynn with a great score of 27, 2nd Pat Conroy (23), 3rd Michael Simon (22).

The Junior competition took place on Saturday with a great turnout of 27. The prize for the boys was won by Ryan Finneran, 2nd Niall Brennan, 3rd Gareth Gilmartin. The prize for the girls was won by Aileen Emmet, 2nd Niamh Scanlon, 3rd Henrietta Daly. Category prize winners were Stephen Scanlon, Liam Kelly, Daniel Murphy, Paddy Nally, Cian McKeon, David Boles, Freddie Stewart, Devon Finneran, Robert Kearney, Michael Gaffney and Finley Daly. Susan thanked all for taking part and congratulated all the winners. Ryan Finneran, spoke very well on behalf of the players thanking Susan for arranging the competition and he wished her well for Lady Captains Day. Congrats to the mixed foursomes on a great win against Ballina last Wednesday evening. Good luck to our “top golfers” in action next weekend as the Cecil Ewing Team take on Ballaghdereen in the first round.

Saturdays competition will be an 18 Hole Ladies and Gents Stableford, with a Four Ball Better Ball on Sunday. There are Competitions each day, please check noticeboard for full details. June 22nd
Last Sunday's 18 Hole Stableford was won by Sean Heslin with 47pts (another one for Geevagh), 2nd Gary Carty with 44pts, Gross Dermot Lally, and 3rd Pat Conroy 41pts. Special mention for Benny Morgan who had an eagle on the 7th, the connection to Shane Lowry is obviously paying off. Thursday night's Mens Competition was won by Pat Brogan with 31pts (Countback), 2nd Michael Keville 31pts and 3rd James Cooke 29pts. Friday's Scramble was won by Brendan Gaffney and Michael Bermingham, 2nd Gerry Emmett, Susan Gaffney and Michael McCawley. Congrats to the Mixed Foursomes on a great win on the 20th against Carrick-on Shannon last Wednesday and are now through to the zone final against Ballina.
Competitions for this week are the Mens Competition on Thursday night, Friday is social golf with a nine hole Scramble. Next Sunday is the Lady Captains prize for the men on Sunday. Format will be an 18 Hole Stroke.Lady Captains Day is on Sunday July 5th.

June 15th
There was a large turnout last Sunday for the Presidents Prize with Patrick Egan winning after 27 holes.At the presentation Club President Owen Garvin thanked everyone for taking part and for making the day a great success.He paid tribute to all those who helped on the day or assisted in way in the running of the club with a special mention for John Breheny and the greens committee for the great condition of the course. He also thanked Phil and Gerry for the excellent catering and finished by thanking his wife Geraldine for picking the prizes.
The winner Patrick Egan responded by saying he was delighted to win and thanked Owen for a great day.He also thanked his playing partners and added that it was time for an Egan to win a major after coming so close in the past. He finished by complimenting Gerry Egan, the Greens convenor adding that otherwise he wouldn't have a lift home.

June 8th
On Sunday the Barty Moran Trophy waswon by Paddy McLoughlin with a great score of 62pts, 2nd Liam Whyte 64pts, Gross Thomas Gallagher, 3rd Michael Gilmartin 65pts.
Thursday night's Mens Competition was won by Brendan Gaffney with 30pts, 2nd Peter Perry 29pts and 3rd Sean Heslin 27pts (countback). Friday's Scramble was won by John Cryan, Maura Farrell, Pat Wynne and Michael Gilmartin, 2nd place to Michael Keville, Gloria Hogan and Michael McCauley. In Inter Club, well done to the Mixed Foursomes who beat Enniscrone last Wednesday evening. Also well done to Michael Gilmartin who won the first inter club competition in Ballaghdereen with 41pts.

June 1st
On Sunday we had the Club Classic in aid of course development. The winners were Liam Whyte and Michael Keville with 44pts, 2nd Michael Gilmartin and Declan Carty with 43pts and 3rd Colm Cooke and Paddy McLoughlin 41pts (countback). All prizes were bought locally and special thanks to Cromleach Lodge and Susan O’Mahoney for sponsoring “Nearest the Pin” and the “Longest Drive” These were won by Seamus and Colm Cooke. The raffle was won by Susan Gaffney and Carmel Keenan. Thanks to all for taking part and supporting the Classic.
The weekend was also the first of the new inter club competitions with Ballaghdereen hosting the first event. Results to follow, Thursday nights Mens Competition was won by Eamon Perry with 27pts, 2nd Jonathan Egan 25pts, 3rd Michael Keville 24pts (countback) Fridays Scramble was won by Stephen Bohan, Jonathan Egan and Pat Manahan. 2nd place to Carmel Corcoran, Michael Keville and Jack Fallon. In Inter Club competitions commiserations to the Jimmy Bruen Team who lost 3/2 to Carrick last Monday and best of luck to the Mixed Foursomes who play Enniscrone this Wednesday evening. Please note that the Club meeting has now been moved to Wednesday 10th (same time)

May 25th
On Sunday the Holmpatrick Cup was won by Pat Gannon and Gerry Emmett with 42pts, 2nd Michael Simon and Michael Reid with 41pts, 3rd Charlie O’Donnell and Terry Canning 40pts. Thursday nights Mens Competition was won by Damian Eames with 23pts, 2nd Michael Reid 21pts (countback) 3rd Jim Mooney 21pts. Fridays Scramble was won by Brendan Gaffney, Pat Conroy and Tadgh Egan. In Inter Club competitions commiserations to the Pearse Purcell Team who lost out to Castle Dargan (3/2) and also to the Ladies Junior Foursomes who also lost narrowly to Carrick-on-Shannon.
Competitions for this week are the Mens Competition on Thursday night, Friday is social golf with a nine hole Scramble. Next Sunday/Monday will be a Club Classic in aid of course development and will be an open competition. Members/non members are encouraged to take part. Format will be a fourball betterball.

Club Captain Brendan Gaffney announced a new inter club venture between Boyle, Ballaghdereen, Strokestown and Castlerea. It will involve weekend competitions and reduced green fees for members. More details to follow.

May 17th
The PGA Tankard was won by Pat Conroy with 39pts (Countback), 2nd Michael Keville 39pts, Gross Brendan Gaffney and 3rd Michael Reid 38pts (Countback) Thursday nights Mens Competition was won by Michael Gilmartin with 21pts (countback), 2nd Liam Mullaney 21pts (countback) 3rd Johnathan Egan 21pts Fridays Scramble was won by Willie Tiernan, Pat Conroy and Johnathan Egan.
In Inter Club competitions this week well done to the Jimmy Bruen Team who beat Tubercurry last Monday night with an exciting finish on the 19th. Congrats also to the Ladies Inermediate Team who beat Bundoran with a winning birdie for Myra Egan on the 21st. Commiserations to the Ladies Juniors who were beaten last Thursday by Ballina.

May 11th
There was a great turnout for last week's competition in aid of Boyle Marching Band. The winners were Gerry Emmett and Sean Heslin with 45pts. Second were David Wynne and Owen Garvinon 44pts, while Colm Loftus and Peggy Feely were third with 43 pts (count-back). Club Captain Brendan Gaffney complimented the Band for all its great work, saying that it was a pleasure to support them. Pat Conroy,in response, thanked the Club for holding the event which was a great fundraiser, sincerely appreciated by the Band. Thanks also to Phil and Gerry for catering for the event.
Competitions this week are the mens' competition on Thursday and a nine hole scramble on Friday evening. Next Sunday is the PGA Tankard.

The Club paid its last farewells last week to past Captain and past President Tom Regan who passed away. Tom was a long standing Club member and a true gentleman. Commiserations are extended to Mai and family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.
Finally; a sequelto the story from last week-Jimmy Doyle was seen out again with his caddy-so they must have mended their differences (and the wheel)!!
A big well done to the organisers of the Amayzing Grace concert on Saturday night last. Agreat turnout and a great Lá na gClub which celebrated 125 years of the Association.

The Eastern Harps Classic on Saturday was a great success with almost 30 teams taking part. The winners with 103pts were Charlie O’Donnell, Damian Eames, Michael McHale & Terry Canning 2nd place with 99pts (countback) were Gerry Emmet, Sean Heslin, Jimmy Doyle and Pat Conroy. 3rd place went to Michael Morans Team. The first nine was won by Jim Mooney, Francie Flanagan, Michael Gilmartin and James Shivnan. Longest drive was Nigel Clancy, (former Sligo footballer) and nearest the pin was Junior Smith (current over 40’s soccer player).

Competitions for this week are the Mens Competition on Thursday, Friday is a nine hole Scramble. If you know a beginner please invite them along. Next weekend the Marching Band Competition and takes place on Saturday and Sunday. Format is a fourball betterball. Entry Fee includes a meal, full details on notice board. Congrats to the Ladies Junior Foursomes who beat Bundoran last week but commiserations to the Miele team who were beaten by Ballyhaunis. And finally…… Rumours are circulating of a caddy assault on the eighth last Thursday April 30th. Details are sketchy however it does appear to have been “wheely serious”. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Club Detective. (in confidence). The assailant is likely to be in search of a new wheel so members are advised to keep a close eye on their caddies.

April 27th
Sunday's competition was won by David Wynne with 44pts, 2nd Liam Mullaney 43pts, Gross Sean Heslin and 3rd Michael Keville 39pts. Thursday nights Mens Competition was won by Jimmy Doyle with 20pts (Countback), 2nd place to Michael Keville 20pts and third to Shane O’ Dowd 19pts. Fridays Scramble was won by John Cryan, Michael Simon, Michael Gilmartin and Michael Bermingham, 2nd place to Michael Keville, Susan Gaffney and Paddy McLoughlin.
Competitions for this week are the Mens Competition on Thursday with a nine hole Scramble on Friday. The scramble is a great opportunity for members to get involved in social golf and all are encouraged to take part. If you know a beginner please invite them along.
The Eastern Harps golf classic will be on Saturday May 2nd. All welcome, please contact Michael Keville for bookings. April 20th
The voucher competition was won by Liam Mullaney with a great score of 59. 2nd place went to Jordan Nally with a 62, gross won by Sean Heslin and 3rd place to Michael Costello with 67 (countback). Well done to all the winners.
Thursday night's Mens Competition was won by James Cooke with 21pts, 2nd place to Jim Mooney 20pts (Countback) and third to Patrick Egan 20pts.
Friday's Scramble was won by Patrick Egan, Gerry Egan and Carmel Keenan, 2nd place to Jim Mooney, John Egan and Pat Wynne. The quiz that followed was won by the the Egan Clan, with second place going to the Olivia & John Kelly, John McNamaa and Dessie McLoughlins and 3rd place to the Conroy Clan. Club Captain Brendan Gaffney thanked all for taking part with special thanks to Mandy Toolan for arranging and hosting the event. Thanks also to Phil and Gerry.

March 29th
The weekend had the second round of the Spring League with Sean Heslin, James Cooke and Paddy McLoughlin leading the way on 178.4pts, in second place with 180.2pts are Gary Carty, Timmy Carty and Eoin O’Donoghue and in third place with 180.6pts are Jim Mooney, Jimmy Dwyer and Mary McKeon. The final round is on next Sunday with all to play for. The Thursday night competitions will be commencing shortly, more details next week.
In other news congrats to Boyle natives Chris O’Dowd starring in “The Boat that Rocked” and Paul Young whose company produced “The Secret of Kells”. Both films showing in Carrick Cineplex.
And finally to those who didn’t already know…..A lip-out is a putt that comes to and touches the hole and then changes direction.. There are three kinds of lip-outs. There's the 'baby' lip-out, which catches just enough of the hole to swerve away. The 'horseshoe', which comes right back at you. Then there's the lip-out that defies physics where the ball spins more than 360 degrees and stays out.

March 23rd
The first round of the Spring League commenced last weekend with Gary Carty, Timmy Carty and Eoin O’Donoghue leading on 87.1pts, in second place on 89.3pts are Jim Mooney, Jimmy Dwyer and Mary McKeon and in third place on 89.4pts are Gerry Emmett, Michael Reid and Maura Farrell. Nest weekend will be the second round with the final round on the following week April 4th/5th. The St Patricks Day Fourball was won by Willie Tiernan and Michael Keville (41pts) countback, 2nd Gary Carty and Jordan Nally (41pts), 3rd Vincent and John Egan (40pts).
And finally, (at last)…..Damian Eames won the 2008 King Harmon last weekend beating Fergus O’Beirne in a tight match. Well done Damian.

March 16th
Yesterday's nine hole re-entry was won by Michael Keville with 23ps (countback), 2nd David Wynne 23pts and 3rd Jordan Nally 22pts. Next weekend will see the start of the Spring League which will run over three weekends. Format is a scramble for the first nine holes with a rumble for the second nine. Teams can play Saturday or Sunday. Full details are on the Club noticeboard.
